diy quote on canvas

this is my absolute favorite quote.
it's from the movie the perfect man...
which is really not a popular movie.
hilary duff in her prime baby.
and i LOVE the movie.

i decided i wanted this quite in my home to remind me,
every day holds the potential for beauty.
so inspiring to me &
a great reminder to be positive and find beauty in every moment of life.

& making it was super easy!

after this, i got on my computer and chose a font i liked.
i wanted to choose a thick/bold font because i knew i would be cutting it out.
i cut out each letter...tedious, but easy
and arranged them on the board.
when you have arranged your letters, mod podge them on top of the canvas

WARNING... be VERY sure that every word fits across evenly.
i had glued on the word "potential" got to the last "a" and had ZERO space for the "l"
crap.
so i added some buttons & smudges of ink pads to cover my mistakes.
i wasn't to happy about it... i really just wanted it to be simple,
but hey... it works!

if you are looking for some easy diy home decor,
this will do the trick!
have a lovely day!

hiking in style

as you may have noticed,
there was NO party this weekend!
well... it's cause i was partyin' myself.
we had a blast in cedar city, utah...
the best part hands down was an incredible hike we did in kanaraville.
slot canyons, natural slip & slides, waterfalls, sweet climbing. LOVED IT!
but i decided after that i needed some sweet hiking gear
instead of the old gym shorts and dirty dash shirt i wore:

so i put together some hiking makeovers for myself and thought i'd share them with you.
now go hike in style!

five summer dress styles for 2012

happy tuesday!

i will post it in a few days as a separate page on my blog.

& today
for your entertainment,
here is a guest post from catherine

Five Summer Dress Styles For 2012
With summer just around the corner it’s time to pack away the layers and start showing some skin in a pretty summer dress. But with such a variety of dress trends around this year, it can be difficult to know which styles are going to keep you ahead in the fashion stakes. Let’s take a look at the top five summer dress styles for the 2012 season.

Floral Dresses

The success of floral prints last year is set to continue and the trend will be huge again this summer. Reflecting the freedom and innocence of summers long past, the floral print is sure to keep you looking good whether you’re on the beach, at the park or simply out shopping. For a nice range of floral prints check out the online selection of Ted Baker dresses.

Midi Dresses

Midi dresses are a versatile addition to a summer wardrobe and perfect for creating an effortlessly stylish look. Team with kitten heels or strappy sandals for a summer look that’s great for the office, a quiet drink with your partner or a night out with the girls. Midi dresses are adaptable and easily customised, so take the time to pick out the perfect accessories and you’re sure to have a great outfit for any occasion.

Mini Dresses

Perfect for showing off those toned, tanned legs in the summer months, mini dresses are a great way to inject some confidence into your style. Try with a pair of gladiator sandals and a well-worn jacket to bring your look bang up to date. Look out for mini dresses in this summer’s favourite pastel colours to complement a deep tan.

Fluid Maxi Dresses

The return of the fluid maxi dress, complete with deep slit along the thigh, is a great way to mark the style transition from spring to summer. Keep an eye for organza, satin and semi transparent materials for a feminine and flattering finish. You can take your pick of prints, but remember that soft pastels and bold florals are set to be the major trends of the summer.

Asymmetrical Dresses

The asymmetrical dress, with its shorter front and longer rear hemline, is going to make a big comeback this summer. With a huge variety within the style itself, you’re sure to never get bored with an asymmetrical dress.

layers, skinnies, & gem vest

preschool is over!
and i have a one week break until summer school starts again..
i love when i have a break from wearing professional pants all the time,
so here is a fashion post for today.

what i wore:
so i have to tell you a couple fun things about this outfit.
+i got the vest at the abercrombie & fitch outlet store in park city, utah.
it costed $9 (at the most)
+the two shirts under the vest were hand me downs (from my mom & sis.)
+and the skinnies are the miley cyrus line from wal mart. yes. wal mart. i should be embarrassed,
well, i kinda am. but i LOVE the way they fit.
so hey, get your clothes from here & there and mix them all together to make this:

i added this blurry picture in for fun. i kinda liked the way it turned out.

happy week!

magnetic chalkboard tutorial-how to paint with chalkboard paint

so today's post is kind of a tutorial within a tutorial. i am showing you my most recent project:
a magnetic chalkboard

while also giving detailed instructions of how to effectively use chalkboard paint.
so let's begin!
you will need a piece of sheet metal & chalkboard paint.
super great tip #1: buy sheet metal at a home improvement store like lowe's or home depot.
you can find sheet metal in the air circulation & ventilation aisle for around $9.
yes! a steal.
super great tip #2: sometimes it is easier just to buy things. i thought about making homemade chalkboard paint, but by the time i bought all the supplies, i would be spending about the same amount or more money than the real stuff.
the paint i bought costed me about $2 at hobby lobby. it was listed at $3.99 and i used a 40% off coupon. saved myself some time & probably money too.
Americana Brush-On Chalkboard Paint
(the edges are taped for safety. they can get sharp, so BE CAREFUL!)

now here's for the tutorial within the tutorial
to apply the chalkboard paint effectively follow these steps:
1. apply a think coat of paint all going same direction (say you choose vertically). let the coat dry completely.

2. when the coat is completely dry, apply another thick coat, this time going the opposite direction (now you would go horizontal). let the coat dry completely.

3. apply the third and last coat of paint going the same direction as you started (vertically). you will have all areas covered.

4. after the third coat has dried, let the chalkboard paint sit for 24 hours untouched. i know. it is so tempting to draw on that beautiful surface. but don't do it! after 24 hours has passed, cure the chalkboard surface. this is done by rubbing chalk across the whole board trying to cover all areas completely.

5. erase the chalk you used to cure, this sort of creates a chalk mess.
and you are done with your chalkboard painting!

to finish the magnetic chalkboard here's what i did.
i used an old frame we had from an outdated sailboat picture.
i am sure you could find one at a thrift store easy.
i removed the picture and used the mat as a back for my sheet metal.
with E600 glue, i glued the sheet metal to the mat from the picture.
it would have been nicer to use the cardboard backing, but my sheet metal was too small for my frame, so i wanted the white to show through rather than cardboard.

i added lace with a hot glue gun around the edges of the board.

then secured it all in the frame:

here it is in our basement with all the stuff on it and bad lighting unfortunately.

i love the fact that this board is magnetic & a chalkboard as well.
have a great thursday,
come back tomorrow for a ladyhue giveaway!!
yaay!

my little black book of fashion: an inspiration book

hello!
hope everyone had a great weekend.
thanks for everyone who linked up to the spread the love party,
we had some great linkups. so thank you!

i have a collection of fashion magazines from years ago that i can't seem to let go.
there are pages in the magazines that i just LOVE the items or the looks.
but the magazines have really become a pain.
they take up a lot of space and they are heavy.
so i decided i would create one book that combined the parts of the magazines.
i cut out accessories, clothing, looks, etc. from magazines that i love and seriously just threw them in a black sketch book from a craft store.

i added accessories that i wanted to remind myself to make.

i only finished a couple of pages. i still have plenty of magazines to go.
now i will always have one place to look for inspiration.
my inspiration book!

have a lovely day!
